Named by the Chicago Reader as “arguably the greenest elected official in Chicago,” Mike Quigley’s environmental record is unsurpassed on the County Board. He has sponsored every piece of major environmental legislation adopted by Cook County in the last decade and continues to press the County to make environmental sustainability a top priority.

His accomplishments include:

Greening Cook County. Mike’s 2005 report on ways the County and Forest Preserve District could improve their own environmental performance and encourage greener practices among the public was well received by the press and public and has served since publication as a environmental policy to-do list for Mike.

Environmentally Preferable Purchasing. Mike sponsored a major expansion of environmental purchasing guidelines, increasing the scope from only paper products to a diverse array of goods, including carpeting, paint, office furniture, and cement.

Bottled Water. In 2007, Commissioner Quigley passed ordinances banning the use of County and Forest Preserve District funds for the purchase of bottled water. Bottled water is in fact not cleaner, safer, or healthier than tap water, and the production of bottled water consumes many resources.

Climate Change. Mike co-sponsored legislation committing Cook County to joining the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) in 2009. The County must reduce its carbon emissions over time or it will be required to purchase carbon offsets on the exchange to compensate for any shortfalls.

Green Buildings. Mike sponsored the County’s Green Buildings Ordinance in 2002, requiring all new facilities to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards developed by the U.S. Green Buildings Council.

Bird-Safe Buildings. Under Mike’s leadership, Cook County became one of the first major jurisdictions in North America to take action to reduce the number of birds injured or killed each year when they mistake the reflections in window glass for open sky and collide with buildings.

Green Vehicles. Mike’s amendments to the 2005 Vehicle Policy Ordinance sought to promote the purchase of more fuel-efficient vehicles and shrink the size of the fleet overall.
